Is Caller ID Spoofing Illegal

Caller ID spoofing may be on it’s way to becoming extinct. The U.S. Senate has passed a bill to outlaw it.In our opinion, caller id spoofing should not be outlawed.  Guns kill more people than a harmless prank call or a service to hide your identity on the phone.

Here is the article about making caller id spoofing illegal.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate has passed legislation aimed at stopping scam artists who use fake phone numbers on someone’s caller ID to dupe them into surrendering personal banking or other valuable information.

The bill, known as the Truth In Caller ID Act, zoomed through the Senate unanimously late Tuesday.  Sponsored by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, the bill would put an end to so-called “spoofing,” which occurs when a telephone caller alters the number or other information that appears on a recipient’s Caller ID to conceal their identity with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain something of value.

The legislation would make it a federal crime to use caller identification services to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information.  Under the bill, those who violate the law would be subject to a $10,000 fine per incident and could spend up to one year in jail.

“Spoofing is one of the worst of the new information-age con games,” Nelson said today.

A similar bill in the House hasn’t received a full committee vote yet.  Nelson said he’ll push to have the House accept his version.

We’re big fans of sharing. I guess we paid attention when we were in kindergarten. So today we’ve enabled a new feature within your SpoofCard accounts so you can share those call recordings just about anywhere on the web. Got a business call recorded that you want to share with your manager via email? Or maybe you’ve got a hilarious prank call to one of your friends that you want to share on Facebook? SpoofCard’s new call recording sharing, powered by the popular AddToAny widget, can share your call recording across email or through dozens of popular social networking, social bookmarking and micro-blogging sites in just a few clicks!

To share a recording, just visit the Call History page within your account, click the Play link to play a recording, and then click the new Enable Sharing checkbox.

Not only can you spoof a caller id and disguise your number to make any number you want show up on caller id, but you can record the calls, disguise your voice and then send off the final conversation to the entire world.

If you haven’t tried a spoofcard, I suggest you try it out for free. If you like buy it. You’ll be having fun with it for hours.
