WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Senate has passed legislation aimed at stopping scam artists who use fake phone numbers on someone’s caller ID to dupe them into surrendering personal banking or other valuable information.
The bill, known as the Truth In Caller ID Act, zoomed through the Senate unanimously late Tuesday. Sponsored by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson, the bill would put an end to so-called “spoofing,” which occurs when a telephone caller alters the number or other information that appears on a recipient’s Caller ID to conceal their identity with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongfully obtain something of value.
The legislation would make it a federal crime to use caller identification services to transmit misleading or inaccurate caller ID information. Under the bill, those who violate the law would be subject to a $10,000 fine per incident and could spend up to one year in jail.
“Spoofing is one of the worst of the new information-age con games,” Nelson said today.
A similar bill in the House hasn’t received a full committee vote yet. Nelson said he’ll push to have the House accept his version.

Come on, you really think people are using this to make prank calls? Some scam is calling me pretending to be Wells Fargo and phishing for my SSN and loan number. You’re full of shit.
Caller id was never reliable in the first place
is spoofing illegal in ohio? tonight i believe i was spoofed. the person used the police department’s phone number which showed up on my caller id. the person identified themselves as a detective and said a sexually natured complaint was filed against me. they knew where i worked, my employee id number and other personal id. i was threatened and was told by the person posing as a police officer that i was in trouble. i was at work when this all happened and was forced to leave work by my manager because of the harrassing call and message. i am going to verizon tomarrow for phone records, then my next stops will be the police station {in ohio it is illegal to pose as a police officer} and then to the prosecuting attorneys office. since it was done using the police dept. number, im also forced to report it to the fbi. spoofing for fun may be harmless, but it cost me work time at my job, harrassment, threats, and alot of undeserved stress and anguish. you will be hearing from me again and many of the agencies ive listed for those records on who done this. god cant even help them when the state attorneys office gets done with them. shame on you, your web-site and your users. cowards.

Spoofing is only fun until someone does it to you! Spoofing should be outlawed because it does more harm than good. That may be something Free Caller ID Spoofing does not want to hear, but it is a violation of privacy above all else. they should outlaw it. it’s dumb && only shows imaturity. someone keeps calling me and they know who i am, where i live, who my family is, and they keep calling me names. It’s not right.

This is not a funny Matter i am victim in this phone spoofing and internet and could have served jail time . Ther person who gets caought should be setenced to more than a year and 300 calls ?? 300 thousand $ fine is not enough !!! OUtlaw this stuff !Games need to be over .
You wouldn’t think guns do more harm than spoofing if you were on the other end of the harrassment. People are harrassing me using a spoofing service so they can show a number that isn’t theirs on my caller id. They claim I owe them money and if I don’t pay right now, the police will be here to arrest me in the morning. They have made hundreds of these calls in the last year. I’d really like to know who is making these calls. BTW it is usually guns that were obtained Illegally that do the most harm. Not legal guns.
Okay this just happened to me last night. Some girls were calling this guy saying it was me! He texted me at 1 in the morning. I had to convince him it wasnt me calling him. Its not a prank phone call when someone is saying they’re someone else. Its almost identity theft. I was very annoyed that someone would do that. But too tired to do anything about it. Anyone saying “its just a harmless little prank” has never had it happen to them. Its harmless if you are not pretending to be someone else. They can call your boyfriend, your boss, who knows! It should be banned and illegal!
